College Students Still Reject Hookup Culture
The Cut at New York Magazine partnered with SurveyMonkey to gather data on the sex habits of college kids, and nearly 800 people responded. Their findings very much confirm what I have been saying for the last few years: Millennials want less casual sex, more relationships, and eventually almost everyone plans to marry. Most college students reject hookup culture, at least for themselves. We gave them the Sexual Revolution, and they’ve said “No thanks.”
Looking at the infographic, right off the bat, we find:
- Confirmation of lots of virgins.
- Widespread Pluralistic Ignorance (“Everyone is happily hooking up except me”.)
- A majority of students want to wait a month or more before having sex.
- Few students use dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, etc.

Nearly three quarters aim for 5 maximum total sex partners before marriage. Only 11% of women and 12% of men want 10 or more partners – in keeping with the 10-20% sexually unrestricted portion of the population:
Most students do not engage in risky behavior:
- Most use birth control.
- Few have been raped.
- Half don’t drink at all, and only 10% binge drink.
Most importantly, students are not cynical about relationships.
- Two-thirds of non-virgins have had a long-term relationship > 1 year.
- Nearly all respondents define a date as a romantic meeting between two people.
- Only 1% describes a date as “sex.”
- Nearly everyone predicts they will marry.

Way to reject the cultural peer pressure! This is good news for singles in general, because these attitudes are unlikely to change much after college graduation. (Except in NYC :-/ )
It’s just not true that the majority of people want to hook up casually and avoid relationships. As long as you filter out players and sexually aggressive men, the odds are the guy you like is in the market for something more than FWB.
Whether you’re a virgin or sexually experienced, there are are equal number of people of the opposite sex in exactly the same boat. That means that what you want is within your reach, so don’t give up!
