Pierre-Etienne Flandin fut un haut dirigeant politique sous la IIIe République. Député à l'âge de 25 ans, plusieurs fois ministre, ce spécialiste de l'aviation devint président du Conseil en 1934. Il s'opposa au réarmement de l'Allemagne et signa les Accords de Stresa. En 1938, il est une première fois la cible d'attaques. En chef de l'opposition, il adresse un télégramme de félicitations aux quatre signataires des accords de Munichâ- On ne manquera pas de le lui reprocher.
En décembre 1940, il accepte de remplacer Laval au gouvernement de Pétain. Il en profite pour retisser les liens avec l'Angleterre et les Etats-Unis. Les nazis auront tôt fait d'obtenir son départ. Malgré cela, il est arrêté à Alger et incarcéré à Fresnes. Il sera enfin relevé de sa condamnation à la Libération. A partir d'archives, de témoignages et du journal intime de Pierre-Etienne Flandin, son petit-fils a réussi ce délicat devoir de mémoire, en restituant le portrait politique de ce grand républicain oublié.
