Esta ilustre figura de nuestra cultura recibió una esmerada educación musical en La Habana y Madrid, y brilló como intérprete en los principales salones de París. A su regreso a Cuba, estremeció la capital con sus presentaciones. Ya en Santiago funda, junto a otros intelectuales del momento, varias instituciones para el desarrollo de la música de concierto; la principal fue el Conservatorio Provincial de Música de Oriente. A partir de entonces, se entregó a la enseñanza y la promoción de esta manifestación artística.
