Duties and Obligations of Educators

The right of learners to education applies to the teaching process in schools and the involvement of the educator (Links to an external site.). Therefore, all educators have an obligation to protect the right of learners to education (Section 29 of the Constitution) by their professional conduct. The educator has a wide variety of duties that are essential for carrying out the teaching programme in a school.

These include:

• Formulating teaching outcomes

• Careful planning  (Links to an external site.)and preparation of lessons

• Ongoing assessment  (Links to an external site.)of learners to ensure that they are meeting the required standards

• Disciplinary conduct on his/her own part, and maintaining discipline and order in the school and classrooms to protect the learners’ right to education (Section 29)

• Regular consultation with learners’ parents

• Seeing to the safety and well-being (Links to an external site.) of the learners (Section 24)

The right of learners to education applies to the teaching process

in schools and the involvement of the educator.

• Ensuring the best interest of the child (Section 28) and

• The execution of certain administrative tasks within their delegated tasks.

Learners can expect educators to maintain a high standard of professional ethics and to be present to teach their classes, assist them with their learning difficulties, report on their progress and look after their well-being. There should be a relationship of mutual trust and respect between educators and learners.
