The ability of educators  (Links to an external site.)to organise classrooms and to manage the behaviour  (Links to an external site.)of their learners is critical to positive educational outcomes. You will remember that the kind of learners envisaged in the curriculum are lifelong learners who are confident (Links to an external site.), independent, literate and numerate. These learners can develop to their full potential, be tooltip HINT red ICON.pngcompassionate and respectful of the environment and participate as active and responsible citizens in our country (DoE, 2002:8). It is therefore important that all individuals involved in education should know their responsibilities and willingly accept accountability  (Links to an external site.)for the responsibilities assigned to them. Every individual educator should accept responsibility for ensuring quality education and effective teaching and learning for the class or learning areas delegated to him or her.

Educators must be accountable to their learners and to the learners’ parents, as well as to their superiors, for successful teaching and learning. Learners must also take responsibility for their own learning, conduct  (Links to an external site.)and deeds. Learners are accountable to their educators and their parents. Parents have the responsibility to motivate their children to attend school regularly, to encourage them to do their assigned tasks and to work hard to make a success of their school careers. Parents have the further responsibility to attend school functions and meetings and to contribute financially to their children’s school. They are accountable to the school and their children.

Every school and classroom should be a place which promotes, protects and fulfils the values underpinned in our Constitutiontooltip TIP blue ICON.png, such as social justice (Links to an external site.) (e.g. protection against abuse and ridicule from others), equality (no unfair discrimination and respecting the rights of others in the group), non-racism and non-sexism (ensuring all learners are accepted and equally valued for their contributions, and guarding against type-casting in roles and tasks), respect for human dignity (Links to an external site.) (showing respect and kindness towards each other in the school and in classrooms), building an open society (Links to an external site.) (allowing all learners to participate in activities, allowing access to books and websites, and having transparent goals), accountability and responsibility (being accountable to learners, parents and teachers for the task done, and as individuals being responsible for own behaviour), and a spirit of peace, tolerance  (Links to an external site.)and respect for the rule of law.
