Introduction: Values entrenched in the Constitution

                     

 

 In the South African context, the Manifestotooltip TIP blue ICON.png on Values, Human Rights (Links to an external site.) and Democracy  (Links to an external site.)(Department of Education 2001:13-20) identified ten values, which the authors described as the founding values of the Constitution (Links to an external site.).

 

The authors of the Manifesto describe the Constitution as a vision of a different society based on tooltip FACT purple ICON.pngequity, justice and freedom for all. It is a call to all South Africans to seek to build a just and free democratic society in which the potential of each person is freed. Underpinning the Constitution are the following values, identified by the authors of the Manifesto:

 

  • Social justice

  • Non-racism and non-sexism

  • tooltip HINT red ICON.pngUbuntu (Human dignity)

  • Accountability

  • The rule of law

  • Respect
